Barranco is filled with historical buildings, there was a feature on the area in the Sunday Times Travel Magazine by Stanley Stewart. As he explored Peru's capital city, this renowned British journalist talked at length about the "funky neighbourhood of Barranco", clearly falling for this part of town: "In the 19th century, Barranco was a fashionable seaside resort where Lima's aristocracy built Belle Epoque summer villas. In the 21st century, it has become the city's bohemian neighbourhood, a Left Bank of artists, writers and musicians, including the fashion photographer Mario Testino, whose MATE gallery is one of the new highlights. Barranco is now Party Central, full of atmospheric bars."
